In May 2018 Juan Ignacio Cuartas, as part of an investigation into the dissemination of false information on social networks, was sentenced to 15 months in prison for spreading false news on Twitter. This is the first case of its kind examined by the Spanish judiciary.
The first trial of a journalist for spreading false news on Twitter is underway in Spain. Jose Sanchez Melara, 72, has been accused of damaging a politician’s reputation. He denies the charges and believes social media has allowed him to “protect his freedom of expression.”
In 2016, Mr. Y. was found guilty for spreading false news on Twitter that contributed to the fall of the share price of a company called Internet Corporation Virtual Inc (ICV), which owned the now-defunct newspaper La Verdad. The accused explained that he had not realized that his posts were false and did not intentionally try to spread false news; however, he admitted that he knew it was a “serious offense.”
