BMW may be keeping the i5 under wraps for now, but we have the first information about the BMW 5 Series, which will be revealed in a few months.
In a few months, the Eighth generation of the BMW 5 Series Sedan will be launched – also as the BMW i5 – but for now, we have some information and no images. According to BMW – under the hood – it is a car that, despite being a sedan, has a particularly sporty design. What is certain is that in this context everything will be done. In other words, any drive system you can imagine – of course, and all-electric like the BMW i5.
BMW 5 Series for all tastes
And when we talk about all tastes, we are mainly referring to the drive systems and not to the design obviously because the laminate leaves everything up to our imagination. The new BMW 5 Series Sedan can be offered in purely electric and plug-in hybrid versions, as well as gasoline and diesel engines with 48-volt mild hybrid technology.
At the 2023 BMW Group Annual Conference, BMW President Oliver Zips gave an insight into the new BMW 5 Series model range, stating that the 5 Series Sedan will also be available as a BMW M Performance model. “The all-electric BMW i4 M50 shows how BMW perfectly combines dynamic performance with electric mobility,” said Zipse. “It was the best-selling BMW M model worldwide in 2022. The all-electric BMW M Performance model will also be included in the new BMW 5 Series Sedan.”

Zipse has revealed that a new variant will also be added to the familiar engine selection of the new BMW 5 Series Touring. “The BMW 5 Series Touring is very popular, especially in Europe,” he noted. “From spring 2024 it will also be available in an all-electric version, which gives us a truly unique selling point in this segment.”
The global launch of the new BMW 5 Series Sedan will begin in October 2023.
What else do we learn about the new BMW 5 Series?
The new BMW 5 Series Sedan will be built exclusively at the BMW Group plant in Dingolfing. The factory located in Lower Bavaria is the company’s largest production facility in Europe. Production of the new BMW 5 Series will start in the same year that the factory completes 50 years of manufacturing BMW models.
The brand’s cars have rolled off the production lines in Dingolfing since 1973, with the current ‘portfolio’ including the luxurious BMW 7 Series and 8 Series models and the all-electric BMW iX. These facilities also house the company’s know-how center for the production of electric drive systems, whose functions include the manufacture of electric motors and high-voltage batteries for the BMW i5.
Recall that the first generation of the BMW 5 Series Sedan was released in 1972. Its launch also saw the introduction of a new model naming system that used a three-digit combination to indicate the model series and engine variant.
